The Gospel of Brisbane, according to Tosin.

My first introduction to music - it was at home. We would have singing sessions in the house.  My Dad he played organ in church, and with six children well … we had a choir in the house.

I started playing drums when I was 14. And then from there, I moved on to playing piano, which is what I mainly play now. And then out of that experience I discovered that I have an ability for writing music.  I discovered that to write songs … it was easy.

I’m from Nigeria, so I went studied classical music and piano there.  Then I did my jazz study in Brisbane. I have siblings all over the world - like in the US & Singapore. I've got two brothers who are really, really into music, but they’ve followed different paths to me. They went into music production and have their own production company. So I guess everyone in our family is fairly musical. Most of my brothers play at least one or two instruments as well. And if we were all together, we could all spontaneously sing something together without any practice.

Setting up the Brisbane City Gospel Choir, is probably the biggest thing, the biggest outcome in my musical journey.  I always wanted to have a choir really.
I grew up listening to the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and all these gospel choirs in the United States. So for me this music was …. it was beautiful. I love the choir harmonies. I love being able to pull families together.  It is something that really, really, really fires me up.

I think I was 17 or 16 when I had that dream of having a choir and at the time I didn't think too much of it. When I came to Australia in 2009, I remember when I arrived - I just felt naturally that “Yes, this is where I need to do it.” I couldn't find a gospel choir or any contemporary choir so I started it up in 2010, which is now 11 years ago.

We started with a couple of friends, and then the choir just naturally grew because people saw it and thought “Oh that’s great” and just gravitated to it.

I love that we have a really, really diverse group of people, from 18 year olds to 50-something year olds. We’ve got about 22 singers and another 10 or so musicians who we work with. It's really amazing. When we all sing together you get this really unique voice, a beautiful sound that you may not get in a team choir or another adult choir. It's just different. And plus, if it's gospel music, you know, the structure, the harmonies… Yeah. Gospel is beautiful.

Anyway, the Stones ...

My Dad has always been a Rolling Stones fan.  I remember coming out of the show and the endorphins were absolutely pumping and we were all so happy and so pumped up.  And everyone’s singing and walking back to the hotel singing all the songs and all together.
